Exclusive & Restricted NZ Release

Reserve Watervale Dry Riesling by Aussie’s Grandfather of Riesling “John Vickery”. Over 50+ years John has amassed 50 Champion Trophies & 400+ Gold Medals for his “World Class” Aussie Rieslings. This is Riesling to age for decades, a 20–30-year-old Vickery made Riesling will impressively memorialise the most important of life’s future moments!

John is to Aussie Riesling as Max Schubert was to Shiraz and Penfolds Grange. Max passed many years ago, but John is still alive and kicking and remains active in the making of Australia’s finest Rieslings, all the while passing on his unparalleled knowledge of the grape and the land to emerging young winemaking talent. John has a strong ethos when it comes to producing a wine of structure and purity that will age well and deliver flavour concentration.

His Reserve Rieslings embody this philosophy and are made from the finest fruit parcels in each vintage. The ‘Hayshed Block’ has east-west row orientation and a gentle west facing aspect. The vineyard sits approximately 420m above sea level from top to bottom. Even with a dry winter, 2018 was a great Watervale vintage with excellent quality, and the Hayshed block produced wine of exceptional purity and finesse. Fermentation was extended over 40-days in stainless steel tank by maintaining lower temperatures, this preserves and maximises the aromatics and fruit purity, and allows for superior ageing and a later release.

The Wine...
Classic Watervale Riesling aromas of lime skin, mandarin peel, kaffir lime, white pepper with enticing floral notes. An energetic and weighty palate that has a real zing factor from go to whoa… with excellent synergy between the concentrated fruit in the mid-palate, oily, creamy texture and the zesty, lime peel acidity driving its length. Classic Aussie Riesling showcasing John’s legacy of world class, dry Rieslings. Delicious drinking now with oysters or cellar for a further 10years+ and enjoy the complexities of bottle age. Enjoy in its youth with oily fish, fresh oysters and crustaceans… or age for up to 3 decades when it will become rounder, richer and honeyed.

I worked with both John & Max (1985-1995) in my time with what was then the Penfolds Wine Group. I know the great works of both men which is why I can search out magnificent wines like 2018 Vickery Watervale Reserve Dry Riesling. You could easily assign Grand Cru status to this “World Class” Vickery crafted Riesling, so with its undoubted class and winemaking pedigree… it seems like a steal at $32.99 bottle.
Enjoy, JEFF
