Description
Barrel-fermented Sauvignon are often reserved for Sauvignon aficionados… and if you want a good one – then go for Section 94. While past vintages have benefited from bottle age or a couple of hours in a decanter the 2017 is stunning and very approachable right from the first glass. This release is harmonious already, beautifully complex but with lots of fruit showing through on top of the oak, smoke, and wild ferment aromas.
Smells
Yellow tree fruits, cedary oak, a whiff of flint and dried herbs like oregano and perhaps cardamom.
Tastes
Rich yet focused, toasty and with good freshness, significant oak influence driving a long, layered and highly original finish, this is a great Section 94, delivering immediate pleasure but keeping something in reserve for 2028 and beyond. This is an outstanding glass of white wine, somewhat reminiscent of White Burgundy, rather than Sauvignon Blanc. A statement reflecting the new exceptional quality and class of NZ barrel fermented Sav.
