The Vieilles Vignes Francais from Bollinger is one of the rarest and most sought after bottles of Champagne in the world. The Fine Wine Delivery Co team were fortunate enough to set foot in one of their two hallowed pre-phylloxera vineyards (Clos St Jacques) adjacent to the Bollinger HQ in Ay in 2016 (the personal touch may well have gone some way to getting us our precious 6-bottle allocation). The vines ‘migrate’ up the hill using a technique called en foule, which involves submerging the tips of vines underground, creating a root system that then shoots up sporadically. The vineyard team look out for shoots popping up and put a stake in the ground next to them so the vines may grow. One of the strangest things we’ve ever seen in a vineyard, but painstaking and unique and the wine must be tasted to be believed.

Honey and toasted bread, with hints of candied citrus, quince, mango, papaya and ginger.

Full bodied and insanely concentrated, it’s a strangely spicy Champagne that is at once Bollinger yet completely other-worldly. A special occasion all on its own, it’s best with white truffle and caviar.

We taste, rate & guarantee every wine we sell.
