Description

Seppelt pioneered Australian “Sparkling Shiraz” back in the 1890’s... they are the generational “Masters” of this iconic and uniquely Australian wine. Seppelt Show Sparkling Shiraz 2008 is firstly a prestige Bendigo Old Vine (circa 80-years old) Shiraz red table wine aged in 5,000 litre old wooden vats for 18-months to build flavour and texture. It then begins its second and much longer journey undergoing a 2nd fermentation in the bottle... where it remains ageing on its lees for 7-years. After disgorgement it spends a further 18-24 months maturing in bottle prior to release as a 10+ year old wine. This process is the equal in time and quality to the finest French Prestige Champagne Cuvee’s... that you can pay circa $400-$1,000 bottle for. Seppelt Show Sparkling Shiraz is from Seppelt’s “Luxury” Collection – by the time if gets to market and sells for circa $100AUD bottle... it is inconceivable that Seppelt can be making money from it. Rather it makes a statement of style and excellence for the Seppelt brand itself. Only made in exceptional years... 1994 – 2004 – 2008 are the only 3 releases in 20-years. In the mouth it has extraordinary richness and depth of flavour that is brought into silky focus by the chocolate laden bubbly mousse derived from 7 long years on lees. It will match with all sorts of cuisine from savoury, meat, dessert dishes to a wide range of cheeses and charcuterie, plus dried fruits, nuts and chocolate. Undeniable luxury... its best served chilled in a smaller red wine glass to allow the luxurious texture to quickly drape over your palate. These days capped by crown seal (like a traditional beer cap) I kid you not when I suggest it could age and evolve until the turn of the century if properly stored. If its bubbles have dissipated somewhat in that time... it is likely to still drink well as a very old Shiraz. It is one of the 7 wine wonders of the world in my opinion... that you should have at least once in your lifetime! I am yet to meet someone who has tried it for the first time and not loved the experience.

Smells

Deep, dark, brooding aromas of dark chocolate, black plums, vanilla, coconut, cedar exotic Asian spices and subtle earthy notes.

Tastes

Utterly impressive power, weight, and balance in the mouth where generous fruit instantly seduces, but then there is a linearity and poise at the same time. Dark and milk chocolate flavours linger with blackberries, mulberries, cinnamon, and nutmeg underpinned by coconut and vanilla. This certainly is a showstopper, showcasing the potential and quality of an extreme expression of this this unique wine style. Serve with a diverse range of savoury and sweet cuisine... also with dried fruits, nuts, and chocolate. Or simply savour the silky-smooth depth and richness of this Show Sparkling Shiraz and you will likely become its biggest fan. Enjoy now... but no hurry... it may well outlive all those who get to drink it... if it is well stored.
