Description
Stonecroft Gimblett Gravels Cabernet Sauvignon is the Flagship Red of Stonecroft... best organic vineyards, winemaking, and oak. Alan Limmer put the Gimblett Gravels on the map, his Stonecroft vineyard these days containing some of the oldest vines in the region. When Alan retired, he passed the torch to Dermot McCollum and Andria Monin. The pair have grasped the mantle with both hands, their opulent reserve range of reds ranking up there with the regions finest and most age-worthy wines annually. This Cabernet Sauvignon is a majestic and hedonistic expression of the grape, superbly inky and concentrated with poise and freshness in abundance. Eminently drinkable in its youth as the great reds are... it will be 2028 before she's nearing her peak and another 5-years holding it... if well stored.
Smells
A heady and indulgent bouquet of black fruits, cassis, tobacco, liquorice and leather.
Tastes
Wonderfully proportioned and generous to a fault, the richness of fruit, fineness of tannin and length of palate all bode extremely well for a long future. The spicy, lightly charry oak and savoury complexities add much to the concentrated fruits and the excellent acid balance delivers freshness to the powerful finish. For all of that though, the wine remains approachable in its youth - an hour or two in the decanter while your roast cooks, should just about do it! Enjoy now to 2030.
