Description
The fruit is off the legendary Menzies Vineyard, Yalumba’s top Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, planted in 1975 on the globally famous Coonawarra red Terra Rossa soils. Just 2 kilometres wide and 20 kilometres long, the Coonawarra terroir is defined by a long, narrow strip of Terra Rossa soil over free draining limestone – superlative for growing full-bodied, finely structured Cabernet. Yalumba’s $60+ premium “The Menzies” Coonawarra Cabernet defines this single estate. This Yalumba Sanctum is 100% Menzies fruit and crafted in a more approachable style by the same outstanding winemaking team. At the Limestone Coast Wine Show, The Sanctum blitzed an expensive lineup of wines to take out “Champion Red of Show”, plus the prestigious Bill Redman Trophy for “Best Wine of Show”. Chief of Judges Philip Rich said, “…. It impressed from the outset. “It was a hotly contested class which highlights what a fantastic year 2021 was for the region, but we just loved this wine’s combination of concentration and depth of fruit while also having some finesse and elegance about it at the same time – ultimately, it’s a beautifully balanced wine,” he said. James Halliday was clearly equally enamoured selecting The Sanctum as “Best Coonawarra Cabernet” in his annual Australian Cabernet Challenge 2023. Smells
Intense and captivating aromas of blueberries, violets, Satsuma plum, maraschino cherry, dark berries, French oak.
Tastes
Deep crimson in colour with a magenta hue. Silky and vibrant, the palate is an eruption of luscious black fruits balanced throughout by fine, long tannins. A smooth textural flow of delicious fruits with savoury tobacco, spice, fine toasty oak and a touch of vanilla. Eminently drinkable now, no hurry, it will drink beautifully through 2026+. Serve with your favourite cut of red meat.
