Description

Sometimes a full bottle is a little too much wine, so it's nice to have the option to drink less - but drink better. And when it comes to Pinot Noir, nobody does it better in New Zealand than Ata Rangi. Few estates in New Zealand (or anywhere for that matter) can match Ata Rangi for sheer ambition in Pinot Noir. These lofty goals are reflected in this Crimson Pinot Noir - where other producers would be happy to produce something soft, fruity and accessible, Ata Rangi seek to make a genuine 5-Star wine that will develop with time although still be more accessible than their famous estate Pinot. This 2017 vintage is a cracker from winemaker Helen Masters, a serious, herb infused take on the Martinborough terroir.

Smells

Freshly mown summer hay, red and black cherry and plum with a kiss of French Oak.

Tastes

Taut and quite focused, a wave of plush cherry fruit hits you, savoury herbal nuances carrying the finish, buoyed by long, fine tannins. A classy, serious Pinot Noir, with enough accessibility to enjoy now but with plenty of scope for improvement over the next 5+ years. Great value and a winner with Peking Duck between now and 2025
