Description

Is there a more consistently excellent Flagship Chardonnay in New Zealand? We'd argue Elston's exemplary track record dating back to 1984 makes it a frontrunner. Made from Mendoza clone fruit off the oldest estate Chardonnay vines, 2019 is delicious on release, but like past vintages, should ascend to a glorious peak around 7-10 years from vintage. We recently enjoyed a 2005 that had only just peaked... although it is so balanced and drinks so deliciously as a young Chardonnay, few people have the will to keep it that long.

Smells

A delightful perfume of warm lemon cream pie with brown baking spices, seductive hazelnut against sun ripened stone fruits giving way to figs and nougat.

Tastes

Restrained in fruit flavours with peaches and limes persisting. It is however the salivating, cheek sucking, chalky texture that captures your taste buds, maintaining a poise and elegance throughout the palate and finishing on a long, fine point that keeps building and building. A well structured, classical wine with good ageing potential. Sensational Elston, well worth tucking a few bottles away until post 2028 to experience it at its zenith. Perfect with a herb and butter roast chicken.
