Description
The Giesen family immigrated to NZ in the 80s and from the word go produced legendary Rieslings from their home vineyards in Burnham, South of Christchurch. Now based in Marlborough, producing a huge array of exciting wines, from many varieties with an emphasis on Single Vineyard wines, such as this Gemstone Riesling. This wine was fermented in three parcels: German granite tanks, 500l old barrels and stainless-steel tanks enhancing complexity, texture, and structure.
Smells
enticing lifted aromas of honeysuckle, beeswax, apricot, and lemonade fruit. It's perfumed, exotic and alluring, you cannot help putting the glass to your nose, again and again, to breathe in its heady bouquet.
Tastes
a delicately balanced Riesling with a touch of natural sugar, the fermentation was stopped a tad short of dryness. Ripe exotic fruits, guava, honey, and apricots make for a rich style balanced by seamless acidity. There is a purity of fruit with intensity, like great Rieslings from the Mosel. And with only 11.5% alcohol, there is no need to resist having another glass alongside your favourite canape or creamy cheese selection. The 2021 Gemstone wone Top Riesling in Cuisine March 2021, and we are sure this 2022 will follow hotly in its footsteps.
