Description
Since 1912 the Osborn family have tended vineyards in McLaren Vale, South Australia. Today fourth generation family member, Chester, makes distinctive wines using traditional methods both in the vineyard and the winery. From entry level to iconic, all d’Arenberg wines are basket pressed with red wines foot trodden during fermentation. Their prolific History of awards & accomplishments dating back to their roots is listed on their website and takes some reading. Current winemaker and custodian Chester Osborne is a man of many colours and coats. Clever, thoughtful, experimental, and environmentally focused in the vineyard certified Organic & Bio-Dynamic in 2016. These days draught horses are used to plough the vineyard rows and harvest the grapes. Chester is an amazing winemaker having been recognised as Australian Winemaker of the Year on several occasions. d’Arenberg is the consummate generational family business, a family who care deeply about the land and are passionate about the wines they make. This 95/100 Huon Hooke, Champion Trophy & Gold Medal d’Arenberg High Trellis Cabernet is a compelling example of their natural approach to the land and traditional winemaking. Full-bodied with embracing tannin and laden with dark fruits... it is a powerful, concentrated, complex Cabernet that gives drinkers so much for so little. 2021 was an outstanding vintage, it should age well through 2031. But is the ultimate BBQ and red meat red. Eminently drinkable in its youth, it’s a fireside Cabernet too while nibbling on aged cheddar.
Smells
Classic Aussie Cabernet with abundant aromas of dark plum, berry, cassis, mint, cedar and dried herbs.
Tastes
Full-bodied and laden with dark fruits embraced by grainy and cocoa powder like tannins achieved through traditionally foot treading the grapes. A vibrant and rich Cabernet with fine cedary oak, savoury spice and subtle herb complexities. A powerful expression of its harmonious bio-dynamic environment. Put on a rib roast, grab a T-bone, or scotch fillet. Fire up the BBQ and polish up the steak knives, you’re in for a grand red experience. For optimal drinking pleasure serve at 17-18 degrees.
