Description
The most famous wine of perhaps South Africa's most famous producer, Kanonkop (ka-NON-kop, which means Cannon Hill). Paul Sauer has won many International Trophies, regularly beating the finest Bordeaux and having won the Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Trophy at the IWSC an incredible four times! The value is impressive - think of it as South Africa's answer to Te Mata Coleraine and you'll be pretty close to the serious, cellar-worthy style.
Smells
Beautiful cassis, florals, violets, tobacco and cedar. Very much in the mold of classic Bordeaux but with cleaner winemaking and an essential purity.
Tastes
Silky, medium bodied and long on the palate, the floral hints come out more alongside fine, grainy tannins that carry the impressive fruit weight well. The palate gives away that it's not Bordeaux, a slightly warmer, richer flavour coming through, though the effect is just as impressive. Definitely one for the cellar, there's no hurry here...drink from now - 2030.
