Description
Originally planted in 1993, the 10ha of vineyards in Onetangi are all on steep slopes ranging from 10 degrees to 35 degrees, called the Grand Cru region of the Island. Enjoying the stunning micro-climate of Waiheke, Obsidian creates generous and sophisticated reds. Named after Mayor Island discovered by Captain James Cook in 1769, and is composed of Cabernet Franc, supported by smaller amounts of Petit Verdot and Malbec. Noted as one of the best vintages ever, this 2019 was made in very limited quantities and is drinking superbly with 5 years of age.
Smells
Beautiful floral notes give a vibrant lift to the black cherry, blueberry, and bramble notes.
Tastes
the hallmark sophistication is characteristic in all Obsidian wines, expressed here with layers of blackberry, liquorice, dark chocolate, and fine spicy oak. A juicy red with a supple mouthfeel and plenty of structure, it is a wine to enjoy now through 2023+.
