Description

First produced 1960 Bin 389 is often referred to as “Baby Grange”... because parts of the blend are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. The blend is always Cabernet dominant although generally has a healthy contribution of Shiraz... 2019 Bin 389 is 53% Cabernet and 47% Shiraz. It has been matured in 25% new American oak hogsheads, the remainder 1- and 2-year-old barrels (includes 2nd use Grange barrels) ... the fruit is sourced from a diverse regional collection of Penfolds finest older vine vineyard sites... including Padthaway, McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, Wrattonbully and Barossa Valley. It is Penfolds decades long practice of sourcing from different regions that provides the quality and style consistency of their reds. They produce some of Australia’s and the world’s finest reds... their great strength derived from inter regionality blending... being their ability to make superior wines in the tougher vintages. This 5 x 96/100 rated 2019 release is classic Bin 389 in a powerful, structured, concentrated and potentially long living style. I am currently enjoying 1996 (now 26-years old) from my cellar and its in the peak of its drinking. Under screwcap I suspect this 2019 will drink nicely for 3-4 decades if well stored... put some away now to enjoy in your later years... also don’t hold back from opening in its youth... just give it a good decant.

Smells

Powerful medley of cassis, black plum, pencil shavings, vanilla and nutmeg spice, liquorice, bramble and fruit cake aromas.

Tastes

Beautiful conjoining of Cabernet tannin and superbly plush Shiraz fruit. A brooding combination of cassis, plum, baking spice, fruit cake, bramble and dried herb complexities pervade the powerhouse palate that is tempered towards the end by cooler refreshing elements. Its generosity and fine structure ensure it can be enjoyed as a young red; however, given it is sealed under screwcap and providing it is stored in quality cellar conditions, it could age up to 30 or 40 years.
