Critics have waxed lyrical about this 2020 Coleraine with many claiming it is the finest of the decade! Even referred to recently in Decanter Magazine as New Zealand's First Growth! And while the much anticipated 2020 vintage looked to be so promising, with earlier releases scoring brilliantly ... I don't think anyone was quite prepared for a wine of this calibre, and incredible cellaring potential!

With scores of 97, 98, 99, and even a perfect 100 our allocation flew out the door in a flash, even the Cellar Door was wiped out. And that's the thing with the truly great wines - you can only sell them once ... or at least that's what we thought!

As you can imagine, we're constantly checking in with the winery to see if every retailer took up their full allocation - and as luck would have it someone did not! So if you missed out on the first offer, or you simply could not restrain yourselves and have drunk it already ... seize this opportunity with both hands to secure one of Te Mata's greatest ever Coleraine releases at just $124.99 a bottle.

“Unbelievably good. Young, but the potential is overwhelmingly potent. Floral, nutty, intense small-berried fruit, cedar, anise and sweet herb. Tight, medium-bodied, so concentrated, but light too, ultra-mineral, fresh, all the gravel and tense cabernet feel, but with perfume unlocked: so flagrant and fragrant. The length is superb. I’m taken aback by the beauty and essence-like nature of this wine. My precious. Easily one of the best wines I’ve tasted in the last decade.”
98+/100 Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, November 2021 (2020 Vintage)

From the outstanding 2020 vintage, this Coleraine displays awesome power, structure and concentration while retaining elegance. As usual, it is tight, but showing the vibrant promise of that awaits the careful collector. This year’s blend is 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc and has spent 17 months in new French oak.

Powerfully aromatic – classical Cabernet characters of crème de cassis, bay leaf, plum, tobacco and graphite.

Dense and focused, still youthful but pristine fruit floods the palate, closely followed by a burly entourage of structural tannins, the fruit still very primary but undeniably luxurious and filled with undeniable potential. Possibly more forward than a classic Coleraine vintage, but with all the bones, flesh and sinew to reward patient cellaring over 10 to 25 years. The wine will improve with a few hours in the decanter before enjoying, especially if opened before 2026.
