5 STAR RATED BORDEAUX BLEND SUPER DEAL

Cult Matakana Vineyard, Top Tier Red!

Boutique Matakana Vineyard Clears their Right Bank Nine Year Old Bordeaux Blend for the Unbelievable Price of $29.99 was $38.99

All too often we forget how good our Kiwi Red Blends are. We hear a lot about the rise of Pinot Noir and Syrah - and they are fantastic wines, but often it is overseas wine lovers that remind us just how wonderful our Bordeaux Style Reds are...and this is an EXCEPTIONAL example!

This boutique cult classic comes from the region of Matakana, on a tiny 1.7 hectare block established back in 2002 at the southern end of Omaha called Te Kie Point. The owner's residence is surrounded by a Gabion wall hence the label. They grow Cabernet Franc and Merlot for this wine, which bears an uncanny similarity to the top Right Bank Bordeaux wines, and it is made by Tracey Haslam of Ti Point.

2011 was a challenging vintage for most, but as often happens the cream rises to the top and the very best quality really stands out from the crowd.
We often recommend to cellar owners to put wines like this away till the ten year mark - and that's almost been done here for you with nine years under its belt already! Not only is it a great price but you won't have to wait long to reap the rewards of extended cellaring!

This is a typical aged bordeaux blend experience with mellowed dark spicy fruit, earthy cedar and tobacco notes and very fine grained tannin. This wine has a subdued power and a wonderful complexity, and is only just coming into its perfect drinking window now through to 2025 and beyond.

Very few people get to enjoy the wines of Matakana as so little of it is actually made, and even fewer will have experienced one like this with its exceptional quality and some patient bottle aging. It is a shining Five Star rated example of what the region is capable of and worth every cent of its usual full forty odd dollar price point. To be offered the chance to buy and continue cellaring this wine at just $29.99 is a rare treat indeed.

So treat yourself, buy some to enjoy now and to watch develop as this is a truly wonderful wine experience and an opportunity that does not come along everyday at this price!

2011 The Gabion Cabernet Franc Merlot

A stunning example of a Bordeaux style from Matakana, seriously wow and with some bottle age. Its worth every cent.

Description

Very few people get to enjoy the top reds of Matakana, since so little is made. Mark Ching's vineyard is only 1.7ha, The Gabion wines from it are made by Tracey Haslam of Ti Point in a very classical and 'Right Bank Bordeaux' style. 2011 was not an easy year for winemakers, but as always the cream rises to the top... strict selection and hands-on viticulture have produced a stunning wine of subtle power and great complexity.

Smells

Classical Bordeaux-like nose of plum, autumn leaves, forest floor and cedar, with hints of tobacco, black olive and cassis. Beautifully done.

Tastes

Mellow, complex and nicely maturing, with a dark core of spicy fruit and earthy cedar supported by very fine, resolved tannins. Entering its best drinking years now, it should be at its best through 2025 and even longer. Imagine a roast dinner with all the trimmings and this wine, a match made in heaven.
