Description
Very few people get to enjoy the top reds of Matakana, since so little is made. Mark Ching's vineyard is only 1.7ha, The Gabion wines from it are made by Tracey Haslam of Ti Point in a very classical and 'Right Bank Bordeaux' style. 2011 was not an easy year for winemakers, but as always the cream rises to the top... strict selection and hands-on viticulture have produced a stunning wine of subtle power and great complexity.
Smells
Classical Bordeaux-like nose of plum, autumn leaves, forest floor and cedar, with hints of tobacco, black olive and cassis. Beautifully done.
Tastes
Mellow, complex and nicely maturing, with a dark core of spicy fruit and earthy cedar supported by very fine, resolved tannins. Entering its best drinking years now, it should be at its best through 2025 and even longer. Imagine a roast dinner with all the trimmings and this wine, a match made in heaven.
