Every year we taste the new vintage of Esk Valley Merlot Cabernet Malbec... and every year we ask ourselves (rhetorically): “Is this the most under-priced red wine in NZ?” 2019 not just continues 20+ year trend... now, with its elevation into the “Gimblett Gravels Annual Vineyard Selection Top 12 Reds” + a whopping 95/100 rating from Tasting Chair Andrew Caillard Master of Wine... its mixing it up with the big ticket Gimblett Gravels heavyweights like Craggy Range Le Sol, Elephant Hill Hieronymous etc. 2019 is another incredibly sophisticated wine from winemaker Gordon Russell at a very unsophisticated price hugely favouring the drinker. Gordon’s winemaking colleagues at Villa Maria refer to him as Mr. Merlot... for he manages to make Merlot hum beautifully; the nose of this wine is just pure fantasy for a lover of Right Bank Bordeaux-style blends. 100% Gimblett Gravels fruit the blend is incredibly pure and densely fruited... it has the structure and refinement of an infinitely more expensive Red. Expect more high ratings, Gold Medals and possibly Trophies for this 2019... they have almost become de rigueur.


Striking intensity and purity of black plum and berry fruits with classic cedary oak, subtle violets and a hint of graphite.


Beautifully pure rush of flavour onto the palate... a perfect marriage of fruit, oak and tannin... the freshness of the finish further elevating its presence and attraction. This is absurdly priced in the drinkers favour for a wine so lavish, luscious and long on the palate. Perfect for someone starting to build up their cellar as its able to be cellared for 5-6 years, but it’s great now. Fire up the grill and let those fine tannins get alongside a delicious cut of red meat.
