Description

No red wine in New Zealand can silence a room as quickly as Esk Valley's The Terraces, this 2014 an absolute show stopper in every sense of the word. We had the privilege of tasting this thoroughbred from barrel on a recent visit to Esk Valley with legendary winemaker Gordon Russell and the taste of the wine remains one of our most abiding wine memories. Sourced from the eponymous Terraces vineyard overlooking the Esk Valley winery, Gordon's new viticultural techniques have taken this great vineyard to another level and the density of flavour is nothing short of breath-taking. A blend of Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the grapes are often picked together (and co-fermented) as the vineyard team prune sequentially to make sure they all ripen at the same time. 2014 was a dream vintage with great heat accumulation resulting in a Terraces that will become the stuff of legends.

Smells

Impenetrably inky in the glass, the legs on the glass confirm the density and viscosity of this incredible wine. A gorgeous nutty espresso note emerges, giving way to dark chocolate, smoked meat, blackberry, cassis, leather, liquorice and black doris plum.

Tastes

Massive concentration and extract, the wine has a presence and swagger like a great sprinter in his prime. Majorly structured and lavishly fruited, the layers and layers of fruit, dried herb and complex earthy notes sweep across the velvety palate and thunder past the finish line, continuing a victory lap around the stadium as the finish goes on and on and on. If there have been better wines made than this in New Zealand, we have not tasted them. A truly profound wine in every sense of the word, this 2014 Terraces will be well worth maxing out the credit card. Enjoy from 2019 and through 2040.
