Description
Villa Maria have the most extensive holdings in the Gimblett Gravels, with 148ha of the total 800 (which doesn't include the vineyards owned by Vidal and Esk). From these impressive holdings, they select only the finest parcels of Syrah to go into their Gimblett Gravels Reserve. The 2016 vintage was another great vintage for Syrah, this wine is a veritable showcase for the grape's boundless potential in NZ. A wine of complete harmony that shows beautifully in its youth but will become a truly great wine from 2025 and well beyond.
Smells
Heady florals and eastern spices, blackcurrants, plum, leather and dark chocolate.
Tastes
Immensely concentrated and succulently fruited, all held in place by fine grained tannins and a fresh cool-climate acid line, which will aid mid to long term cellaring and soften over 7-10 years. A majestic Syrah to enjoy by the fireside or with good cuts of red meat flame grilled on the BBQ and served alfresco. Now through 2029 and well beyond.
