Uvaggio Italian (u-vag-gio) translates to field blend/field wine, where grape varieties are growing in the same vineyard and the grapes are blended prior to fermentation. From la collina vineyard, where eight rows of interplanted Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne were hand harvested and the breakdown is measured (approximately) in picking buckets. These eight rows are all that remain of the original Viognier vines planted in 2001. Just over half the vines needed to be replaced in 2017 so the spaces between the remaining vines were planted with Marsanne and Roussanne. The artwork represents the vineyard plan of the eight rows of Rhone white varieties. The gold symbols represent the Chardonnay clones, linking the Tiratore and Uvaggio wines of la collina.

the warm heady aromas of Viognier instantly flood your senses, canned apricots with undertones of green gage and hints of yellow plums, Mirabel in France, and the slightest lift of spearmint.

The richness of Viognier immediately impresses, quickly balanced and given freshness by the Marsanne and Roussanne evident by a cooling, minty expression giving an elegance, a word not typically used for white Rhone blends. The result is show-stopping, a wine that is intriguing and compelling on many levels. If served blind, it would be hard to pick this as from good old NZ. Drinking well now and through 2026 with seafood or vegetarian cuisine.
