Description

92/100 James Suckling... “There’s a lot to like about the depth in this wine, from the aromas of violets and purple berries to the sleek, succulent and energetic feel of the palate…” & 90/100 Wine Advocate… “2016 Les Grands Marechaux bursts out of the glass with notions of blueberry compote, blackberry preserves and crushed black plums plus suggestions of violets, tobacco and tilled soil…” The 21.4Ha estate of Chateau Les Grands Marechaux is owned by Etienne Barre and Christophe Reboul Salze, with three estates within Bordeaux and a wine merchant, they have all bases covered. The vineyard is planted with 84% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon on clay-limestone soils. To fruit is whole berry fermented in temperature controlled, stainless steel tanks with a 30-day maceration. Malolactic fermentation is performed in French oak barrels. The wine making and vineyard management of Chateau Les Grands Marechaux is consulted by Stephane Derenoncourt who is well known for his work in the Right Bank of Bordeaux (including La Mondotte, Canon La Gaffeliere and Pavie Macquin). This 2016 is stunning, exhibiting true attention to detail and offering outstanding drinking now through 2028.

Smells
A perfumed delight of dark berry fruits, cedar, wet undergrowth, cinnamon and toasty vanilla.

Tastes
The palate is nothing less than exciting with a serious crunch factor. There is vibrancy, energy and concentration whilst maintaining an elegance that satisfies on every level. Red and dark berry fruits interplay with chocolate, cedar and spice with silky smooth tannins that energise the palate. Superb drinking, one sip and you won’t be able to put the cork back in the bottle.
