Description
A new addition to the Mondavi portfolio where winemaking and spirits combine, that of ageing Californian Merlot in dark rum barrels. Perhaps this new trend of ageing wine in bourbon or rum casks is catching on, Australians are doing it too. This is not about subtlety, in fact, the complete opposite, big, bold and in your face. Uber ripe fruit provides the basis for this bold style, sweet fruit is supported by the rum flavoured oak. Some will love it.
Smells
its intriguing, super-ripe plums from the Merlot meet chocolate and vanilla with added notes of coconut/rum from the barrels.
Tastes
It really is where wine and spirit come together, the rum flavours are strong, complimenting the dark plum fruit with chocolate and coffee bean nuances. A velvety smooth texture and soft acid make for a juicy style, perfect in front of the fire with a hearty stew, now and over the next 1-2 years.
