Description
What’s different about Collection that sets it apart from other NV French Champagne? Most NV Champagne consist of a majority of one vintage topped up with reserve holdings of older cuvees... the best examples having circa 10-20% of reserve wines. These aged cuvees significantly influence the complexity of flavour and the texture. Louis Roederer have upped the bar big time with Collection... This blend, their 243rd since inception, is 42% Chardonnay, 36% Pinot Noir and 22% Meunier. Just 59% of the cuvée is from the current vintage of the time... in this case it is 2018. This is where it gets serious... 10% reserve wines aged in oak and sourced from young Cristal vines (including 2012, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 vintages) are added. Then the House adds an extraordinary 31% of a multi-vintage Réserve perpetuelle cuvée containing equal parts 2012 - 2017. The effects on taste, texture, finesse and length are palpable. Serious history, right there. Enjoy 243 while young and fresh... it will immediately grab your attention and have you thinking “this is luxury”.
Smells
A finely interwoven bouquet of green fruit and citrus - the complexity and depth of the aged reserve and perpetual cuvées adds threads of honey, beeswax, and freshly toasted sourdough.
Tastes
Superb balance... the dosage is slightly lower than in previous years, 8g/l allowing the fruit flavours to shine with a lip-smacking texture that is exciting and completely satisfying. Flavours of green apples, lemon peel, hints of raspberries with a dark berry fruit twist... interwoven with subtle brioche, nut and honeyed lees complexities. Seriously expressive Champagne with a lingering freshness that is simply irresistible. Serve with fresh oysters, or fish... or just simply indulge yourself."
