Description
The 49th release of Yalumba’s iconic Signature, named in honour of not one, but two, Yalumba greats! Yalumba winemaker Kevin Glastonbury, and Chief Viticulturalist Robin Nettelbeck. A reflection of this legendary (first made in 1962) Cabernet Shiraz blend… they, and it, are greater apropos the sum of their parts, the best of everything Vini and Viti! Intense, deeply layered and concentrated, silky-smooth, powerful, yet fine with it. The Cabernet components come from 4 different premium vineyards in the Barossa, while the Shiraz comes mostly off the Schiller family vineyard in Nuriootpa on the valley floor. All components harvested from vines between 40 & 100-years old. 12 years ago, I used to draw quality/value comparisons with another legendary Cabernet Shiraz blend, then similarly priced. In that time the Signature price has stayed the same, yet the quality has continued upwards. That other legendary Cabernet Shiraz has since doubled in price. The Signature is the pinnacle of Cellar Red wine value in Australia. This 2019 is beautifully composed and can be enjoyed now but is capable of cellaring gracefully past 2045, if kept in proper cellar conditions.
Smells
Sensationally pure and captivating aromas encompassing cassis, blueberry pie, blackberries, ripe plum, leather, tobacco and cedar, along with myriad wild floral notes.
Tastes
The palate is polished, silken and deeply concentrated with black fruits. The ripe, sweet tannins withdrawing into a supporting role even at this early stage. The finish is long and layered, with hints of plum, chocolate and liquorice, the wine is powerful, yet composed. An absolute gem of a Signature, secure at least a 6-pack and enjoy over 10-30 years… although it is already amazing!
