Description
Top 12 of the 2016 Gimblett Gravels Annual Vintage Selection.
Made by winemaking legend Gordon Russell, the Winemakers Reserve Syrah is a single vineyard wine from the Cornerstone Vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels. Planted in 1996 the vines are spur pruned and trained on a vertical shoot positioned trellis and intensively managed to provide quality grapes for this Winemakers Reserve label. Yields are kept very low and the fruit has been hand harvested and gently handled in the winery.

Smells
Gorgeously dark and opulent on the nose, damson plum, black currant and chocolate mingle with sweet herb, liquorice and brambly fruit.
Tastes
Velvety and vibrant on the palate, the wine has concentration, energy and freshness in spades. A classic cool climate Syrah from a landmark year in the Gravels, this is drinking superbly at 4 years old and will be at its best over the next 7 to 10 years. This is as good as Syrah gets in New Zealand. Enjoy with venison or mushroom dishes.
