A whopping 99/100 by Andrew Caillard Master of Wine and his No.1 Red Wine off Gimblett Gravel’s from the exciting 2019 vintage... only 500 cases made this is a... “Restricted Customer Offer”.

Mission Jewelstone Syrah has been awarded No.1 Red off the Gimblett Gravel’s Vintage of 2019. In his 13th “Annual Gimblett Gravel’s Vintage Selection” ... Master of Wine Andrew Caillard bestowed a whopping 99/100 on this organically crafted stunner... just 1 point shy of a perfect 100/100. At our stunning price of $38.99... its less than 1/3rd of the price of Craggy Range Le Sol Syrah which ranked behind it.

Andrew Caillard MW Review – Rating 99/100...

“Medium deep crimson. Lovely mocha, praline, blackberry strawberry aromas with light pepper sage herb garden notes. Smooth and inky textured with developed mocha-blackberry strawberry, mulberry flavours, crème brulée grilled cashew nut notes, fine loose knit slinky textures, superb mid-palate richness/ viscosity and integrated sinuous acidity. Finishes chalky but fruity and minerally. Absolute masterful winemaking. Almost Burgundian in proportions. Drink now - 2030 14% alc”

The making of Jewelstone Syrah...

The fruit is handpicked and sorted from an organically certified area off their two-hectare single vineyard Syrah block in the Gimblett Gravels. A lengthy maceration on skins with gentle regular hand plunging has achieved perfect fruit flavours and very fine tannins. Aged in French Oak (30% new) on lees for 12 months the resulting texture and complexity are impressive! A spectacular Syrah and Red wine... it’s seductive drinking as a young wine but will comfortably age 15-15 years in quality storage. 99/100 is at the very top of 5 Star ratings... if it were judged on value, it would be a 6-Star wine, I know that sounds illogical... but hopefully it puts the argument around quality v price into true perspective.

With just under 500 cases produced... Mission Jewelstone is a fraction of the volume make of any French Grand Cu Red. Yet every level of the make is on par with those wines. To be able to buy it at $38.99 is extraordinary... and one of those occasionally “EXCEPTIONAL” Reds that happen along and should not be missed. Grab your requirements before the “Sold Out” signs go up... it will be one of the finest red buys of the decade.

Enjoy, JEFF

Description

Established in 1851 by French Missionaries, Mission is NZ’s oldest winery and the birthplace of NZ wine. Jewelstone, is exactly that, the Jewel in the crown of Mission's Syrah vineyard. Additionally, it is now the Jewel in the Crown of the Gimblett Gravels 2019 Red vintage having been awarded just 1 point shy of a perfect 100/100 (actual rating 99/100) by Andrew Caillard Master of Wine in his 13th year of selecting the “The Top 12 Reds” from the “Annual Gimblett Gravels Vintage Selection”. Strikingly... this No.1 Gimblett Gravel’s Red is less than ½ price of the big-ticket wines it finished ahead of a la... Craggy Range Le Sol Syrah and Elephant Hill Hieronymus etc. Less than 500 cases produced... this is a Grand Cru style production in every sense... only with considerably smaller and focused volumes. Don’t miss this spectacular cellar Syrah.

Smells
Classic red and black fruit aromas layered with spices, black pepper, savoury and floral tones... it smells serious.

Tastes
Ripe black plum and sweet red berry fruits run deep into the heart of the instantly seductive palate. Layered with subtle toast, spices and cocoa elements all wrapped in beautifully fine tannins. Rose petal florals and delicious savoury characters further complex the persistent finish. Enjoy now to 2029-2034 with a variety of roasted red meats and vegetables.
