Description
Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz is a true Aussie legend, the first of the famous Penfold Bin Reds founded with the 1958 vintage by the late, legendary, inaugural Penfolds Chief Winemaker… Max Schubert. Always crafted in a fuller bodied, generously fruited and more luxuriously oaked style… it is more popular than ever 63-years on from its first vintage (1958). I worked for Penfolds wines in Australia 1985-1995. When I joined them my first taste of Bin 28 was from the lovely 1982 vintage, and I have tasted every vintage since (39 consecutive vintages). I also tried many of the previous vintages during my time at Penfolds… including the memorable 1962, 1976 & 1980 vintages. 2021 will go down as one of the great Aussie red vintages. Calling on all my history and memory of my treasured and privileged Penfolds journey… I believe this 2021 Bin 28 to be the GOAT (Greatest of all time). Of course, there will be the next GOAT in the years ahead, I wonder if that will be 63-years yonder. A classic mix of rich Shiraz fruit and creamy American oak in perfect harmony. Clearly 2022 has been a standout vintage and with quality vineyard management the fruit was picked at optimum ripeness levels (pure ripe flavours - zero over ripeness). It used to be Barossa-specific Shiraz, these days Penfolds multi-regional blending has driven Bin 28’s persona to next level with greater fruit complexity. A wonderfully accessibly priced, outstanding quality Shiraz that will often outshine wines 2-3 times its price.
Smells
Alluring nose with engaging spice and floral elements underpinning a plethora of black fruits tinged with vanillin oak notes.
Tastes
Luxurious entry onto the palate with a medley of ripe black fruits infused with spices, anise and smooth chocolate/vanillin oak complexities. The firm grainy tannins add poise to the luxurious parade of flavours and will see it age 20-30 years in quality storage.
