Fine Wine Delivery have been knocking very loudly and often on the doors of Seppelt’s owner Treasury Wine Estates (same stable as Penfolds wines) throughout the last 4-years and finally we wore them down. 2018 Chalambar is another memorable vintage of this stunning $19.90 Shiraz, which has a staggering James Halliday average rating of 95/100 over 7 consecutive years. Our 200-dozen exclusive NZ allocation is the first in 4 long years and will be mightily received by previous buyers. However, its just 40% of the order we placed and is offered at the same $19.90 price of 4-years ago... it will be gone before Christmas.
Chalambar has a completely different aromatic profile to every other Shiraz in Australia, a result of its famous cool-climate Grampians & Heathcote old vines origin. It has abundant fruit and structure and apropos its judicious oak ageing regime of 80% 225L barrels (only 15% new) and 20% 3,000L wooden vats... the fruit oak balance is sublime, enabling it to be utterly drinkable in its youth, while still having the capacity to age 2+ decades in quality storage. Red wine lovers should seize the moment to access this iconic Shiraz... ridiculously affordable for a wine that delivers so much.
The wine...
Intense Damson plum and fine cedary aromas layered with hints of woody herbs, liquorice and dark berries. Deep and very mysterious on the palate, with loads of welcoming dark berry and plum fruit wrapped in very fine grain, elegant tannins. Subtle savoury and spice complexities permeate the long, deeply layered finish. One of the great Chalambar even at this embryonic stage... incredibly welcoming as a young wine and will likely cellar 2038+ if well stored. Screams for rare, roast beef or chargrilled meats.
Chalambar has become iconic in Australia across several generations and many decades. The Aussies love it so much they’re reluctant to share it and drink it all themselves. You can appreciate why we are so excited to have secured this token 200 dozen NZ allocation exclusively for Fine Wine Delivery customers. The quality and style are unsurpassed at $19.90 bottle! Enjoy, Jeff
