Description

2018 was another excellent year for Kumeu River Chardonnays... and we are blessed to have received a special allocation of 2018 Mate’s (96/100 Suckling – 96/100 FWD – 95/100 Bob Campbell – 93/100 Wine Advocate – 5 Stars Michael Cooper) from the winery’s cellars on the back of the recent sensational global achievements of 2020 Mate’s. Mate (pronounced matty) was the patriarch of the Brajkovich family and he reworked this vineyard in 1990, two years before his sad passing. The first grapes were harvested and in 1994 the first Mates Vineyard wine was released on the 50th anniversary of the family's arrival in Kumeu. It has the rare distinction of being the only Kumeu River vineyard still planted in 100% Mendoza clone and each year it makes some of the country's most thrilling and long-lived Chardonnay. Testament to its quality is the fact the Mate’s Vineyard regularly beats high-end white Burgundy Meursault 10-20 times its price in international blind tastings. Very impressive on release, but really comes into its own with at least 10-years of cellar aging.

Smells

Distinctly smoky and flinty on the nose, with nougat, peach, floral and spice notes.

Tastes

Complex and weighty palate with peach and ripe citrus infused with nougat, spice and toasty oak in a creamy textural embrace... refreshed by a touch of sea salt on the finish. This Chardonnay calls for food in its youth and reverence in its maturity. A very special wine dedicated to a very special man - sells out every year so get your six pack promptly. It is famous for cellaring particularly well too – ten years plus with ease.

We taste, rate & guarantee every wine we sell.
