Lagrein (pronounced lah-GRINE) is a red wine grape variety native to the valleys of South Tyrol, northern Italy. Along with Marzemino, it is a descendant of Teroldego, and related to Syrah, Pinot noir and Dureza. The Coopers Creek ‘Single Barrel’ Select Vineyards program focuses on experimenting with different grape varieties and terroirs to see how they evolve. This Lagrein has distinct Italian aromas and flavours with smoky, spicy, dark cherry, plum and brooding savoury notes. If you like reds from Tuscany/Piedmont, full bodied Otago Pinot or Hawkes Bay Syrah? Then this is a new experience you should find much to your liking.

Brooding aromas of dark cherry, plum, spices, underbrush, and prosciutto.

It has the juiciness of a Chianti, but the fruit is in the darker Central Otago Pinot Noir spectrum. Smoky, savoury, and gentle black pepper notes evolve in the mid palate and carry strongly through the creamy, juicy fruit filled finish. Even better on the second day, suggesting a good decant in its first few years and potentially at its best drinking 2019-2024. Perfect with BBQ lamb cutlets
