Description
Montepulciano is widely planted through Central and Southern Italy and is believed to have originated in Tuscany as a close cousin of Sangiovese. De La Terre has had impressive success with it in the maritime climate of New Zealand’s Hawke’s Bay, this 2018 vintage being an impressive wine of serious opulence, richness, and softness. This wine spends 15 months in oak (40% new) and the fruit concentration completely carries the oak, all the fruit was hand-picked and bottle unfined/unfiltered.
Smells
Fresh leather, black cherry, chocolate and plum, with dusky rose florals, violet, black liquorice, and blackcurrant with lifted notes of white pepper.
Tastes
Similar to a big, rich Merlot in the mouth, the wine has a lovely freshness and hint of savoury oak to balance the deep, dark fruit and robust, structural tannins. A really impressive wine, this will develop well and partner good cuts of steak through to 2027.
