Description
The Guigal domain was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in Ampuis; a small, ancient village at the heart of the Côte-Rôtie appellation. It is overlooked by unique vineyards where vines and wine have been celebrated for over 2,400 years. With history like this you just know the quality in the bottle will follow. Guigal being a stalwart of the Northern Rhone who consistently produce high quality wines for everyday drinking prices. They have selected wines from small domaines for their Gigondas (Southern Rhone) wine, a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre. Combine this with the stellar 2017 vintage (the 2017 vintage is considered on par with 2016) and it’s a win win all round; you won’t regret this purchase.
Smells
a complex bouquet of dark and red fruits, liquorice, roasted fennel and an underlying savoury, meaty complexity.
Tastes
some describe this 2016 as Guigal’s finest Gigondas ever. Loads of raspberries, dark plums, lavender, a touch of rosemary and with hints of raw meat rising. The slightly rustic tannins encase the generous fruit, finishing with a cleansing acidity and a long, warm finish. Absolutely delicious drinking now but will age for 5-6 years and it commands your favourite roasted red meat.
