Description
Nestled on a privileged location in the Douro Demarcated Region (DOC), the Quinta do Crasto dates back to ancient times – the name ‘Crasto’ is derived from the Latin word ’castrum‘, which means ‘Roman fort’. The estate covers 130 hectares of predominantly southern-facing slopes, extending from the banks of the river up to an altitude of nearly 600 meters. Many of the vineyards are planted on terraces carved from schist, the characteristic slate-like bedrock of the Douro that allows vine roots to penetrate deep into the ground in search of water. The grapes are rigorously inspected on a sorting table on arrival to the winery, completely destemmed and slightly crushed, fermented in stainless steel before ageing in French oak barrels for about 12 months.
Smells
Bright purple in colour, with attractive aromas of fresh, wild berry fruit and elegant notes of spices.
Tastes
Balanced on the palate, evolving into a wine with a serious backbone, excellent volume and a fine texture made of velvety tannins. Flavours of cherries, sour red plums, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and a lingering spicy finish make this wine captivating. This 2018 has an energy, vibrancy, and bounce in its step, unlike previous vintages, simply delicious. Great with pizza, or creamy pasta. Drink now or cellar for 1-2 years.
