Description
Champion Trophy, 2 Gold Medals, 96/100 James Halliday & 97/100 FWD. This ancient vine Grenache has been a highlight of the Turkey Flat’s prestige wine range since first release in 1992. Mark Bulman made Grenache his signature varietal after taking over full control of winemaking at Turkey Flat in 2010. Under his direction, this remains respectful to their past tradition of making Grenache into a fine wine, while moving seamlessly into a more refined, contemporary style. The wine was fermented with 15% whole bunch with half the remaining stems also included in the ferment. Maturation took place in a combination of neutral oak Foudres and neutral oak puncheons. Described by wine expert Oz Clarke as one of the "cult wines" of Australia. Early vines were planted in 1847… with the Schulz family taking over in 1860. Now the 4th generation are custodians of this legendary old bush vine vineyard planted in Rhone grape varieties. 1847 is the same year Johann Gramp of Gramp's Orlando (now Jacob's Creek) and Joseph Gilbert of Pewsey Vale planted their first vines. Hill of Grace was planted a year later. Just to put it in perspective, they have some seriously old bush vines and 163-years of winemaking on their land, no wonder their wines are so special and why Oz Clarke loves them.
Smells
A heady perfume of strawberries, violets, cranberries, mulberries, and exotic Asian spices.
Tastes
Abundant red fruits pervade the palate seducing the taste buds, sun-ripened strawberries, and raspberries with complexing notes of crushed thyme, cedar and cinnamon adding yet more dimension. Firm, fine tannins maintain its poise and energy throughout as it dives deep onto the back palate leaving you wanting more of it. Great drinking now through 2030 with BBQ ’ed meats or sticky pork ribs, yum…
