Description

Planted in 1999 with a spacing of 1.5m x 1m (6,600 vines/ha), approaching the planting densities of top Burgundy from where Larry drew his inspiration for Kupe. Now 24 years old… the vines are producing fruit with fabulous depth, varietal character and balance, Kupe has morphed into a unique expression of terroir. This wine is always given every priority during the growing season and in the winery as the best always comes first. In 2021 the crop was smaller than normal and handled with every care possible, to gain better balance and elegance. And of course, bottled without fining/filtration to allow the true expression of this wine to shine. A stunning Kupe, superbly showcasing the strong Martinborough vintage...

Smells

Dense aromas of black and red fruits with a seductive dried herb infusion, baking spices, complex savoury notes, and haunting florals.

Tastes

Immediately strong and concentrated with a delicious attack of sweet black and red fruits. Mixed spices, fine chocolate, anise, and savoury oak add a deep complexity to the mid-palate, conjoined with classic savoury and herb seduction strengthening in the juicy, powerful prolonged finish. The impressive tannin and acid structure that will support its evolution through 2027-2037, needs to be served alongside an equally special dish.
