A special 2012 vintage in Central Otago led to the first release of Wild Earth’s prestige cuvee, “Earth and Sky”… subsequently only made in select vintages. We can see with this stunning 2020 release why this label was created. 97/100 Wine Orbit... 19/20 Raymond Chan Wine Reviews, 94/100 Cameron Douglas MS and a powerful 96/100 Fine Wine Delivery Panel... confirmation of its quality, depth and charm. Crafted by one of NZ’s leading winemakers... the awesomely talented Jen Parr... it’s beautifully made. The finest handpicked grapes from three Bannockburn vineyards… one of the sites on the sandier soils of Cairnmuir Road… the other two border the Bannockburn Sluicings, steeped in mining history. Each parcel was fermented separately with the final blend having around 15% whole clusters which enhances tannin structure and aromatics. An extended 18-25 days on skins was followed by 12-months maturation in fine grain French oak barriques - 25% new, the rest seasoned 2-5 years. From fruit selection… to fermentation… to choice of, and time spent in of oak… Jen got it perfectly right! A beautiful expression of the “Earth and Sky” in 2020… that yielded this magnificent Otago Pinot Noir. Enjoy through 2030+.
Smells
Dusty leather and earthy notes complex the fresh black cherry, floral and dried herb aromas.
Tastes
With fruit yields 50% down... you’re treated to a flood of flavour concentration that is tamed with finesse as it reveals multi layers of black cherry and plum threaded with spices and herbs. Silky as you like, it glides over the palate... this is a statement Pinot Noir with a long drinking future and many more complexities to evolve over 2026-2030. Enjoy with herb crusted lamb rack or duck breast.
