Description
Yalumba are a 5 generation (165-year) Barossa Family-owned producer who own a large portion of the finest old vine vineyards in this world-famous wine region. And, very rare in Australia… they also have their own oak cooperage (make their own barrels from scratch) enabling them to air dry the oak as long as they want plus full control over the level of toast per barrel. Best old vine vineyards and total control of oak quality and style… it should not be such a surprise then that this bargain priced Samuel’s Collection Barossa Shiraz shocked with a huge 98/100 score at Winestates Annual Shiraz Review trouncing $150.00 Shiraz competition. It has all the generosity one looks for in classic Barossa Shiraz, plus the accompanying oak. That comes with excellent fruit concentration and purity plus a degree of elegance not common to similarly priced Shiraz. The Hill-Smith generationally held quality values are mirrored in this striking 2021 Barossa Shiraz. Delicious in its youth, it has the potential to age nicely through 2027-2030.
Smells
Blackberry and cherry with underlying red berries and seductive dark chocolate aromas.
Tastes
Concentrated blackcurrant and blackberry infused with dark chocolate, liquorice, vanilla spice and cedary, toasty oak. The luscious, full flavoured palate is embedded in fine, chalky tannins and juicy acidity and although generous it finished with a surprising, pleasing degree of freshness that welcomes you back to the glass repeatedly. Fabulous by itself, or with BBQed meat or a cheeky medium hot curry meat dish… enjoy now or up to 10 years from vintage.
