Description
For such a major wine region of Spain, it's surprising how few Priorat wines are widely available in New Zealand. This Petit Pissares is a gem of a discovery, showing off the primacy of Garnacha Tinta (Grenache) in this area just south of Barcelona. A bright, succulent, and silky soft red wine in the finest full-bodied Grenache tradition, it sees 6 months oak ageing in new and 2-year-old barrels. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees (very lightly chilled) as cooler serving temperatures give the wine freshness.
Smells
roasted red meats with blackberries thrown in the baking dish, ripe plums, chocolate, hints of cough syrup and brown spices.
Tastes
big, ripe, plush wine with dark fruit flavours, saved by the savoury meaty complexity, mouth-coating tannins, and zingy acidity. For a riper style, this is delish. Perfect with game and red meats now and for the following 3-4 years.
