Organically Grown, 50 Year Old Vines

Huge concentrated flavours of Blackberry, Blackcurrant and Boysenberry with a spicy chocolate finish, soft velvety tannins and a creamy texture...delicious!

Pietra is made by Menhir Salento Wines and is situated about 10km from the breathtakingly beautiful coast of the Adriatic in Puglia, Italy’s “heel of the boot” and the origin of Primitivo in Italy. The Primitivo grape was introduced to this region back in the eighteenth century, and the name is derived from the term Primativus referring to its early ripening tendencies. It is a black skinned grape with a high sugar content capable of creating robust wines, high in alcohol and crammed with big fruit characters.

Menhir Salento cover 40 hectares of land growing on shallow red soils with layers of calcerous rock, perfectly free draining and ideal for vineyards. Also part of the Estate is a seventeenth century baronial palace that houses the Restaurant, an ampi-theatre for live concerts and outdoor dining, an ancient underground olive press, and an organic farm. Sounds like somewhere to visit on your next trip!

This organically grown and made wine from 50 year old vines, is a stunning example of its variety. With its hugely concentrated flavours of blackberry, blackcurrant and boysenberry backed up by a luscious chocolate and spice finish. Soft velvety tannins and a creamy texture make it an ideal accompaniment to pizza, roasted eggplant or barbecued meats.

If you haven't tried Primitivo before, or are just looking for something to get you out of your red wine drinking rut, then try this wine. Its rich flavours and unique sweet savoury edge will be sure to bring you joy, especially when it sells elsewhere at $33.99. This is Southern Italy in a bottle - a delightful experience that will make you wish you were sitting amongst the vines in Puglia itself.

The Primitivo grapes from these 50 year-old vines are hand harvested, fermented and aged on lees of 6 months to ensure the rich powerful fruit is balanced by vibrant acidity and seductive tannins.

Smells

Dark berries, dark chocolate and plenty of toasted spice characters.

Tastes

Very concentrated on the palate, blackberries, blackcurrants, boysenberries fill the mouth, before the chocolate and spice. Velvety tannins and a creamy texture lead into a leisurely finish. Drink now with pizza or BBQed meats.
