Description
Arguably New Zealand’s finest Pinot Noir, certainly if track records are closely looked at and an argument we support. Ata Rangi have been doing Pinot Noir consistently excellent and for longer than anyone. No surprise that Ata Rangi is the #8 most searched Pinot Noir globally on Wine Searcher… which includes all those vaunted and fabulously expensive red Burgundies that few Kiwis ever get to drink. An incredibly high achieving wine since the early 1980s, they’ve had a dream run even by their lofty standards with four of the finest vintages ever in succession. Fittingly released in August 2022, Fine Wine Delivery’s 25th Birthday… 2019 vintage is already racking up big international and domestic ratings. 98/100 James Suckling – 98/100 Bob Campbell – 97/100 Decanter – 96/100 Cameron Douglas MS. It’s brilliant value by global standards… a fraction of the price of like quality Premier & Grand Cru Burgundy. Under screwcap and in quality storage conditions… you could expect it to age gracefully through 15+ years.
Smells
Insanely complex with fragrant red and black fruits, rosehip and cranberry notes with a herbal infusion, thyme, and a touch of cedar.
Tastes
Immensely concentrated and still very densely packed at this early stage, one can get a glimpse into the future of this embryonic star. Deep, dark flavours of cherries, spices, and dried herbs, yet this 2019 has vibrancy, poise, and sophistication, not often seen in Ata Rangi Pinot on release. Often the structure is closed and the tannins obviously and sometimes aggressive, but not this 2019, wow a star on release. Give this wine a few years and then enjoy from 2026 until 2035 at least. A legend in the making.
