2013 d'Arenberg Dead Arm Shiraz

FWDC 95/100 Gold

It's always a pleasure to open the new vintage of d'Arenberg Dead Arm Shiraz from the Osborn family, but in great years like 2013, it's especially exciting. Named after the eutypa dieback disease in grapevines - which kills one arm of the vine but leaves the vintner with the consolation of excellent wine on the part that remains - this 2013 is a typically big and structured wine with serious and imposing tannins to back up a massive core of dark fruit. Beautifully polished and rich in its youth, it will reward cellaring for 15 to 20 years from vintage - but will be equally at home with a thick cut of sirloin for those not willing to wait!

A big dark and foreboding nose of black licorice, plums, cassis, leather, truffle and cedar.

Intense plum, raspberry, blackberry and leather, with hints of dark chocolate and layers of creme de cassis, held back by seriously fine-grained tannins. A big wine built for the long haul, decant if enjoying before 2020 - and probably afterwards too, since this monster will throw some sediment in the cellar!
