Description

Crafted by the Dunleavy family... founders and makers of the legendary Te Motu wines on Waiheke Island. “On a vineyard at the isolated Eastern end of the island, a man laboured tirelessly to build his dream – green grafting vines to create an extraordinary Syrah. Today, his legacy lives on in The Grafter.” Te Motu Wines reference to the work and dreams of founder Terry Dunleavy. Waiheke Island is far enough off Auckland’s coast for the rain rising over Auckland’s Waitakere Ranges to disperse across the inner harbour. It has less rainfall and more sunshine hours than Bordeaux in France. Not only does Waiheke excel with Bordeaux varieties it has built a strong reputation for spicy, complex and deeply flavoured Syrah. The Grafter is a beautifully savoury example, much more Northern Rhone-ish in style than many of the more vibrant Hawkes Bay Syrah. 2019 was a great year for Syrah on Waiheke and this triple 5-Star expression will age beautifully through 2026-2029.

Smells

Classic Rhone like aromas of blackberry, raspberry, tar, smoke, pepper and liquorice.

Tastes

Elegantly medium bodied, but richly laden with black fruits and savoury spicy characters. This is quintessential Waiheke Syrah... one of excellence from an outstanding vintage... and it positively cries out for a good cut of meat lightly seared on the BBQ... or oven roasted lamb racks. Drinking exceptionally well as a young Syrah... it will reward up to 10-years of cellaring too.
