Just 4 of 334 NZ wines achieved a coveted Platinum... 2019 Giesen Single Vineyard Selection “Clayvin” Syrah was one of those, also rated close to perfect with 97/100. Conventional wisdom dictates you can't ripen Syrah readily in Marlborough's cool climate - just one more thing conventional wisdom has got wildly wrong. Clayvin Vineyard is legendary for its SV Chardonnay & Pinot Noir... Syrah was also planted there given the uniqueness of the soils, site and climate. The organically managed vines are fastidiously nurtured with incredibly low fruit yields ensuring high levels of fruit concentration... we’re talking just one bottle of Syrah per vine... and a miserly 2,800 bottles off the entire vineyard. Hardly the kind of winemaking that would impress your banker from a cost perspective... but the kind that is mesmerising and pure in the glass... clearly Decanter WWA Judges picked up on that.
