Champion Shiraz from HALLOWED ground

Clare Valley Legend Jim Barry chose Lodge Hill as a special site for Shiraz... confirmed by a Champion Trophy & 4 Gold’s - Up to $30AUD... stunning @ $19.90

The name Jim Barry is etched permanently in the history of Australian winemaking and of course more specifically as one of the pioneers of the Clare Valley region. Lodge Hill Shiraz has become iconic in Aussie Shiraz drinking circles. It relentlessly collects Champion Trophies and Gold Medals from vintage to vintage. This stellar 2017 vintage winning a Champion Trophy & 4 Gold Medals... on the back of a Champion Trophy & 6 Gold’s for the 2016 vintage. The Aussie’s can’t get enough of it and pay up to $30AUD... which makes it enviable buying for Fine Wine Delivery customers at our best price of $19.90 KIWI.

He was the first qualified Winemaker in the Clare having graduated from Roseworthy College in 1947 and serving 22 years as Winemaker at the Clarevale Co-Operative. He starting purchasing his own land from 1959 and stayed with Clarevale through till 1969 when he went to help the Taylor Family establish their vineyards before going out on his own in 1974. He continued to purchase considerable blocks of land throughout the Clare and a small amount in Coonawarra. The Clare holdings include the famous Lodge Hill block - a very special 133 hectare site purchased in 1977.

Originally this site was intended to be planted in Riesling only, but as Jim started digging he realised there were two distinct soil types.
On one side brown loam over a layer of clay and slate - great for Riesling. But then there was a smaller section that was North facing - so warmer, and with a chocolatey loam over almost vertical sheets of cracked siltstone. Over time the soil shimmies down between these cracks and creates the perfectly free draining environment that low yielding Shiraz loves! Jim knew the Shiraz grown there was going to be something special indeed!

Lodge Hill Shiraz has a long and proud history of winning Trophies and Gold medals consistently - including its fifth year in a row to take out a Gold Medal at the Clare Valley Wine Show. The 2016 won a Gold Medal at six Capital City Shows across Australasia, and Winestar Journal gave the 2014 the highest awarded score of 97/100 and their Top Wine of the year. It has become a classic example of Aussie Shiraz at its finest, and of course distinctly Clare in style.

This 2017 beauty is chocked full of spicy black fruit, laced with liquorice, bitter chocolate and dried herbs. Fine tannins are supported by juicy acids to keep the young fruit in balance, and you can expect those savoury elements to heighten with age through to 2025 easily.

With a Trophy & 4 Gold Medals, plus lofty critics scores in the mid nineties and a James Halliday Winery of the Year... what an impressive Shiraz to mark Jim Barry’s 60th anniversary. We’re celebrating with Australasia’s best price of $19.90 KIWI a bottle!

When Jim Barry first set foot on Lodge Hill, he knew it would grow into a very special vineyard and it has. Famous these days for its Single Vineyard Riesling and this Lodge Hill Shiraz, which has won a cupboard full of Champion Trophies & Gold Medals over many years. The Lodge Hill Shiraz vineyard, on the Clare Valley’s eastern ranges, has soils of rich, chocolatey loam over almost vertical sheets of rock. The cracks between the rock have filled with soil, providing passage for the vine roots and free drainage - the ideal environment for low-yielding Shiraz vines.

Engaging aromas of red and black cherries and plum with clove and vanilla spice, florals, anise, mixed herbs and warm, minty notes.

The palate is bursting with black fruits infused with spices, liquorice, bitter chocolate and alluring dried herb complexities. Embraced by smooth finely gripping tannins, sweet spice and black berry flavours that are deliciously buoyed on the finish by soft juicy acids. Seriously gluggable but do enjoy with savoury and lightly spiced meats and pizza dishes now through 2025.
