Langmeil was the name given to the earliest of the Barossa Villages settled by German immigrants back in 1842, and translates as 'Long Mile'.
Pioneer Christian Auricht established the village having fled his homeland in search of religious freedom. He worked tirelessly to create a community there that included a Blacksmith, Baker, Butcher, Cobbler, and he established a mixed farm that included one hectare of Shiraz vines in 1843.
We now know these vines to be the oldest Shiraz vineyard in Australia, and it is still in use today as part of Langmeil Winery.
The property has had several owners during its lengthy history, however the Lindner Family have owned it since 2011 and are committed to making this an ongoing family business - having settled in the Barossa for six generations already. As migrants themselves with a rich heritage of Food and Wine production, they have a real understanding of the history involved as custodians of that land now. Not only have they restored the historic vineyard, but also the surrounding original village buildings which are now used as part of their business, ensuring their preservation forever.
And the transformation doesn't stop there....the Lindner Family strive for excellence in their wines too. It is their goal to create wines that sit alongside the world's best, but at prices everyone can afford. This Long Mile Shiraz is proof of that! They have achieved a lengthy list of accolades across their range and have been rated a Five Red Star Winery by James Halliday. This gold medal winning Long Mile Shiraz is usually reserved for Fine Dining establishments in Australia only, but we managed to secure a limited amount.
It so impressed our tasting panel at its modest $23.90 price, earning itself a 95 point rating from us and a stern recommendation to tuck this beauty away in the cellar upto 2027... if you can exercise that kind of restraint!
The fruit for this wonderful wine comes off vines that are between 12 to 35 years old. 2019 was a challenging vintage in South Australia but like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, with low yields came outstanding fruit quality. Supply is therefore extremely limited , but well worth chasing, which is why we were so keen to get you this exclusively here in NZ.
It's a power-house wine packed with dark fruits, liquorice, spice and all things nice! Its silky tannins carry you through to a long seductive finish. Langmeil do not fine their wines, and use minimal filtration throughout the winemaking process to preserve all the unique characters of the wine. Because of that there is a myriad of secondary flavours that just flood the nose and palate the more the wine opens up, so be sure to decant this wine an hour ahead of drinking.
This is indeed a wonderful example of classic Barossa Shiraz. A wine that punches well above its price tag, and one that we highly recommend cellaring to see how it develops with age.
Don't miss out on this extraordinary wine, that you usually wouldn't see here in NZ - who knows when we'll be able to secure it again!
