Another striking Sidewood Shiraz from the 2020 vintage - 96/100 Winestate + 4 Golds... close to a sell out in Australia at AUD$26.00 bottle.

The Aussies would easily drink it all themselves. So, we are “Lucky” to get this exclusive 200 case NZ shipment. And our customers even luckier to pay just $21.99 for such impressive Shiraz.

Sidewood are a James Halliday 5 Star winery... and winners of 20+ Champion Trophies. Including Decanter Trophy Champion for “World’s Best Shiraz” in 2015... and a whopping 200+ Gold Medals.

Growing and making wine doesn’t get more focused and costly than this… from the vineyard to the glass. An astonishing 12 separate clones of Shiraz from Sidewood’s vineyards across the Adelaide Hills make this 2020 Estate Shiraz a layered, complex wine. Low yielding handpicked fruit selectively harvested and wild yeast fermented. Partial whole-bunch, whole-berry, extended maceration. French oak 300L puncheons and 500L hogshead for 18 months. 25% new with final barrel selection prior to bottling at the estate.

Our 96/100 Tasting Panel Review...
A lovely combination of dark plums and blackberries with high tone red fruits, infiltrated with dark chocolate, coffee grinds and hints of mint. The underlying weight of Barossa Shiraz perfectly contrasted with the finesse of Hawkes Bay Syrah. Plush ripe plum and berry which is reined in by cranberry crunch, cedar, spice and minty complexities. Warming mouth coating tannins and fine fresh acidity elevate the chocolate and toasty vanilla flavours on the finish. The oak is completely integrated adding complexity and structure... in no way dominating. Cellar for 8-10 years to experience its sheer potential. Most will drink it rather than cellar it. It will shine with a juicy cut of red meat... rib roast on the bone would be sensational matching.

It's hard to put into words the outstanding value of this impressive 2020 Sidewood Estate Adelaide Hills Shiraz, without sounding ridiculous. I’ll leave it to you to decide. Every release is on the watch list of premium Shiraz drinkers and our Aussie mates gladly pay AUD$26.00 for it. You’ll be left fumbling for words to express its value after your first sip... given you’ll buy it at $21.99.

Enjoy, JEFF

Description

Sidewood is a family owned winery located in the Adelaide Hills, which is considered cool climate for Australia (maybe not for NZ!). Their aim is to produce elegant wines of the highest quality, which has been born true, with their 2013 Mappinga Shiraz winning World’s Best Shiraz (2015 Decanter). This 2020 is also exceptional having picked up 96/100 from Winestate, a very influential wine publication from Australia.

Smells

A lovely combination of dark fruits, plums and blackberries with high tone red fruits, combined with dark chocolate, coffee grinds and hints of mint.

Tastes

It’s like halfway between a Kiwi Syrah and a Barossa Shiraz; plush ripe fruit which is reined in by cranberry crunch, cedar, spice and minty notes. Charming mouth coating tannins with zesty acidity and toasty vanilla flavours on the finish. The oak is completely integrated and adds complexity and structure rather than dominating. Cellar for 8-10 years as this is a baby. This needs a big, juicy steak.
