Description

Southern Valleys, Marlborough are prized spots for growing Pinot Noir and now it seems Syrah as well. Hand harvested from a single cane, high density planted vines, in a hot pocket site grown at the top of the Brookby Hill vineyard. The fruit was fermented in an open top tank and clay amphora with 30% whole bunch clusters and once pressed, put into 25% new and seasoned French oak barrels for 11 months before bottling, unfined and unfiltered. The quality in the bottle highlights the potential of a top vineyard site and an award winning winemaker, it’s a winner all round.

Smells

lifted aromas of blueberry, mulberry, coffee bean with smoky and cigar box notes.

Tastes

A textbook Marlborough Syrah showing lashings of complexity and spice with a sinewy palate that’s concentrated, taught and with a rendered tension that’s alluring and compelling. The savoury flavours are intertwined with bright dark fruit, milk chocolate and perfumed nuances, a silky mouthfeel and great energy, all make for superb drinking. A wine that will age if stored in a temperature controlled cellar for 4-5 years or if you cannot wait, which is understandable, decant just prior to serving. Made for gamy meats, and savoury pasta dishes.
