Description

L ’Opera Rosso is an IGT Red from Tuscany, a blend of Sangiovese, Primitivo, Nero d’Avola and Syrah rated a HUGE 98/100 by Italian Wine Critic Luca Maroni. Typically, IGT’s offer excellent value for money and more accessible quality, L ’Opera is outstanding on both counts. Conversely, some of the most expensive wines of Italy such as “Sassicaia” and “Masetto” are also classified as IGT’s because they don’t conform to the DOC stipulated rules for that region. Preferring instead to make wines from grapes not recognised by the DOC. In the case of L ’Opera… Primitivo, Nero d’Avola and Syrah are all not officially recognised grapes within the Tuscan region. IGT means “Indicazione geografica tipica”, the wine is typical (grown in) that region, in this case “Tuscany”. L ’Opera may not conform when it comes to the rules of Tuscany; but that is its greatest strength… it delivers extraordinary quality, intensity, richness and character for a red sub $20. We are on the side of these rule breakers. Perfect with pizza or pasta now through 2027-2030.

Smells

An intense bouquet of summer baked raspberries and strawberries with hints of dried plums, figs, exotic spice and subtle lavender.

Tastes

Impressive colour with luscious, rounded fruit unfolding in a luxurious parade of baked, wild berry and dried fruit flavours persisting throughout the palate. Warm, chewy tannins help to reign in the opulence and richness. A salivating acid vein delivers freshness, making the wine irresistible… it proved so for Luca Maroni, moved to award it 98/100!
