Description
Sierra Cantabria are one of 6 Rioja wineries owned by the Eguren family... whom Robert Parker calls the “Royalty of Rioja”. I have twice been to the amazing Sierra Cantabria winery... their outstanding vineyards, cellars, winery and winemaking all core to the wonderful wines they craft. This estate oozes history. This super accessibly priced Rioja Selección is made with handpicked Tempranillo fruit off close planted 30–40-year-old vines. Matured in 2/3rd American and 1/3rd French oak barriques... the level of new oak just perfect... enabling the fruit to hero. A bold wine with equal degrees of elegance and a touch of Rioja rusticity. It flourishes in the glass... each glass more rounded and appealing as it opens to the air and shows off richness and purity. Excellent Rioja to enjoy young but it has the weight and structure to improve through 2027 and potentially live beyond.
Smells
Hints of dried hay, liquorice, pepper and leather underpin the rich blackcurrant, and raspberry aromas.
Tastes
A strong, rich, structured red, the tannins integrated with a wall of black and red fruits, the purity of which is quite striking. Juicy black cherries and nutty complexity permeate the long finish. A charming and character-filled red from one of the world's most famous regions. Try it with hard cheeses or slow cooked meats.
