2016 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir

It's hard to differentiate the levels of excellence between 2015 & 2016 vintages. It's more a differential of years within the same striking terroir.

Description

Arguably New Zealand's finest Pinot Noir, certainly if track records are taken into account, Ata Rangi have been doing Pinot Noir better and for longer than anyone. An incredibly consistent wine since the early 1980s, they've had a dream run even by their lofty standards with three of the finest vintages ever in succession. Bob Campbell MW rates the wine near perfect with 98/100 with James Suckling and Raymond Chan also rating it near-perfect (98 and 19.5 respectively). The product of a long Indian summer, the seeds were ripe long before the sugar levels were ready, the 2016 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir is an instant classic and a must for any serious wine collector.

Smells

Insanely complex with fragrant red and black fruits, herbal notes, thyme and freshly mown hay.

Tastes

Immensely concentrated and still very densely packed at this early stage, one can get a glimpse into the future of this embryonic star. Deep, dark flavours of cherries, spices and dried herbs. Give this wine a few years and then enjoy from 2022 until 2035 at least. A legend in the making.
