Mt Difficulty's Pipeclay Terrace vineyard was planted in 1995 and sits underneath the cliffs fashioned out by the sluicing gold miners. One of the most varied vineyards, there are a range of soils from classic Bannockburn gravels to the very different Scotland point soils with a high proportion of water-holding clay. 2017 was quite a cool season, initially starting with a warm wet spring, before the cool weather returned through to December

Smoky cured meat, pencil shavings and black cherry, the aromas deep and brooding.

Lots of fruit richness on the palate, with toasty oak, dried herbs and a clean elegant finish. A gorgeous wine that really needs time in the cellar, it will be at its best from 2019 onwards and cellar 15 years from vintage if temperature controlled.
